Sheila Boyington has worked in the fields of both chemical and civil environmental engineering, as opposed to environmental engineering with a chemical focus.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its Occupational Outlook Handbook,
"Chemical engineers develop and design chemical manufacturing processes. Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, physics, and engineering to design equipment and processes for manufacturing products such as gasoline, detergents, and paper."
"Environmental engineers use engineering disciplines in developing solutions to problems of planetary health. Their work may involve concerns such as waste treatment, site remediation, and pollution control technology."
After earning her degree in chemical engineering, she worked a Civil Environmental Engineering job with the company Black & Veach. She then went on to earn her Master's degree in Civil Environmental Engineering. She helped start an Educational Technology company that provides online or computer-based learning, and then a national curriculum that was acquired and used by ACT. Continuing her work in educating younger people about STEM, she launched Learning Blade, a science career awareness system, and is a founder of Million Women Mentors.
